BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — There are 34 states with gas prices that are lower than at this time last year, but Massachusetts is not one of them.

The average price of a gallon of gas fell 12 cents in Massachusetts over the past week. At $3.54, gas prices here are 32 cents lower than a month ago, but still 14 cents higher than on Dec. 12, 2021, AAA reported.

"The seasonal pattern of less driving due to shorter days and crummy weather, combined with a lower oil cost, is driving gas prices lower," Mary Maguire of AAA Northeast said on Monday. "If this trend continues, many states could see their average prices fall below $3 a gallon by early next year."

The national gas price plunged 14 cents since last week to $3.26, six cents less than a year ago.

House and Senate Democrats this year turned down gas tax relief proposals before agreeing to about $1 billion in tax relief that featured rebates meant to help with the pinch of high inflation and gas prices. However, that plan was then shelved in favor of $3 billion in tax rebates required under a 1986 law that offered little in the way of relief to lower-income residents and more sizeable rebates to individuals who paid more in taxes.
