BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Former Red Sox pitcher and 2004 World Series Champion Lenny DiNardo brought a message of staying healthy and active to the students at the Beethoven Elementary School in West Roxbury on Tuesday.
Working with the non-profit 'All Kids Bike,' he brought with him a gift of two dozen training bikes.
Boston Mayor Michelle Wu was also on hand.
The day was part of a program that teaches kids how to ride bikes for free.
DiNardo talked to the kids about the benefits of being healthy. "When you get strong, and you exercise, what else starts to feel nice? Your mind. Your brain," he said.
With a '3-2-1' countdown, the students cheered as they were presented with their new bikes. "I'm sure they were glad it wasn't broccoli," he joked. "Me included!"
As the training bikes were rolled out, one was ridden by the school's owl mascot.
All Kids Bike said its 'Learn to Ride' program is taught in all 50 states, serving more than 100,000 students each year.
