BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — A state lawmaker said the new Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority’s (MBTA) Orange Line cars may be a concern.

Massachusetts State Rep. Shawn Dooley said he is concerned that a company owned by the Chinese government is allowed to build MBTA cars. The new Orange Line cars are partially built in China and assembled in Springfield, Mass.

“They’ve been a known bad actor. They’ve done all sorts of hacking. They’ve done all sorts of espionage, of corporate espionage. They’ve implanted listening devices in Canadian cell phones. The Chinese government recently did the Marriott data breach,” Dooley said.

Dooley is introducing legislation to ban, what the state department calls, non-market economies from bidding on these contracts.

The MBTA said its cars are safe.
