BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — With warm weather approaching, Faneuil Hall Marketplace in Boston is undergoing what it calls 'essential repair and maintenance' to help prepare for the summer season.
Heavy machinery and equipment are in use, with fencing set up around Quincy Market to keep people away from the work getting done.
There are concerns regarding the project's timing with the upcoming 4th of July holiday and FIFA events, among others, being held.
A Faneuil Hall Marketplace spokesperson said the project will enhance the overall appearance and functionality of the site, but didn't provide a schedule of how long the work will take or if it will affect the height of the tourism season.
"This work includes targeted cleaning, painting, and general upkeep, addressing maintenance and preparing the property for the upcoming summer season," the spokesperson said. " Faneuil Hall Marketplace is committed to making sure that it is a key community destination for Bostonians and visitors and that it serves as a core economic platform for the Boston community. Faneuil Hall Marketplace will keep the public informed consistent with this commitment."
One worker, though, said the project could take 7-10 weeks, which could extend work beyond the July 4th holiday.
Graham from Amsterdam said he was disappointed that the work coincided with his visit to Boston. "I deliberately took this walk because I wanted to go see this place, so to me, it's just a bit of bad luck that it happens to be in this state right now," he said. "But if I was visiting this area, I would surely be walking around here this 4th of July and looking particularly for a place like this, so I think that would be a real shame."
