(WBZ NewsRadio) — Twenty-five years after the Sept. 11 terror attacks, the day is recognized as a day of service and at Fenway Park, the American Red Cross of Massachusetts is hosting its annual 9/11 Day of Remembrance Blood Drive.
"I've done it on September 11th every year since they started," said Pete of Roslindale. "Opportunity to serve, opportunity to remember the day."
Many showed up at Fenway to roll up their sleeves and help.
"This is 100 percent the coolest place I ever donated," said first-time Fenway donor Nancy of Cambridge. "I've been a longtime donor since I was 16 in high school but especially just moving to Boston, it doesn't get more iconic than at Fenway Park and also for such an important day as well. Seeing everyone come together and just normally, you don't see this many donors at the same time and just the whole community coming together. It's really awesome to see."
Red Sox mascots Wally and Tessie were on hand to greet donors and the Red Sox World Series trophies were also on display. Kelly Isenor of the American Red Cross of Massachusetts said it's a gorgeous view of the ballpark but there's an even more beautiful view looking in.
"People that are taking this day to either work it or volunteer or give blood, it's really just helping save lives," said Isenor.
