WAYLAND, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina D'Ampezzo are soon approaching, which means one of its most popular sports, curling, is back in the public eye.

Although the Olympic sport may look simple on TV, there’s a reason why it is an Olympic sport.

“It takes a lot of practice a lot of time out on the ice. A lot of dedication,” Head Ice Technician at Broomstones Curling Club Daniel Ostheimer said.

The local curling community is particularly excited this year as Southborough native Korey Dropkin who will be competing in this year’s Olympic Games. Dropkin will be competing in the Mixed Doubles with partner Cory Thiesse.

“Vey excited that one of our former members is playing in the Mixed Doubles event,” Ostheimer said.

Dropkin won many junior national championships while a member at Broomstones, which is in Wayland.

“Korey is actually ranked pretty high, so I have a very exciting feeling that they are going to end up on the podium,” Ostheimer said.

Ostheimer even got a tour of the curling facility in Milan, where the games will be taking place.

“Great facility. I’m excited to see the upgrades that have happened from the time that I was there in April,” Ostheimer said.

The first sessions of Curling in this year’s Olympics will begin on Feb. 4.
