DEDHAM, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio— For the last 15 years, Small Businesses Saturday has served as an important reminder to show local businesses some love during the holiday season.

Peter Reynolds, owner of The Blue Bunny Books & Cafe at Dedham Square, told WBZ NewsRadio that while online shopping provides convenience, popping into a local store is a unique community experience that can't be replicated.

“People are realizing that community is really important [and] that seeing your neighbor matters,” he said.

And that sentiment resonated with John, who was also spending his Saturday at the coffee and bookstore. He added that local businesses are the lifeblood of the community.

“Everyone knows everyone’s names,” John continued. “Everyone asks how you’re doing and what’s going on in your world."

More than 30 million independent businesses across the country have signed on to participate in this annual tradition, the U.S. Small Business Administration reported.

According to American Express, small business owners estimated that nearly 20% of their annual revenue will come from this year’s Small Business Saturday sales.

“My heart does a little flutter every time somebody comes in and purchases something,” Kristen, owner of Love and Grace Girls boutique, said. “It makes a big difference.”

86% of consumers said they are likely to make some purchases at local businesses this holiday season, either in person or online.

For some shoppers like Cindy, she said she'd still like to head into the store in person.

“I think it keeps [the community] vibrant,” Cindy said. “You get to walk into a store and get to see stuff you wouldn’t see online.
