Lynn School Bus Service Remains Paused Amid Bus Driver Shortage

LYNN, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Students in Lynn Public Schools are going to have to source their own transportation to get to class for at least another month.

Deputy Superintendent Patrick Tutwiler said in a school committee meeting on Thursday that school bus service will not be back and running until around May 12th because of a bus driver shortage.

The district outsources bus services from a private company called North Reading Transportation -- a decision that School Committee Member Donna Coppola said the district should reconsider.

"We're paying a lot [for this service]," she said. "It's in the millions, we pay, just to have left us like this is really disappointing."

Coppola recommended that the city look into providing their own transportation, instead of being "held hostage" to a company.

The pause in bus services has continued since mid-March as hundreds more students in the district returned to the classroom for full-time, in-person learning earlier this month.
