BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — With the arrival of Summer, the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation has opened its 24 swimming pools around the state to help people stay cool.

Along with the pool openings, DCR had also announced the free ‘Learn to Swim’ program would return and be available at 19 of the 24 pools in Massachusetts.

The program can be found at DCR pools in Agawam, Cambridge, Chelsea, Chicopee, Clinton, Fall River, Fitchburg, Hyde Park, Lawrence, Malden, Melrose, Milford, Somerville, Springfield, Watertown, Worcester, and Boston.

The swimming lessons were broken into three separate sessions, which consist of eight half-hour swim classes for ages four through 12.

The first session takes place July 6 through July 14, the second session would be available from July 20 to July 31, and the third and final session is set for Aug. 3 to Aug.14.

The DCR has also reminded folks that they need lifeguards all over the state, especially in Northern Mass.

Hourly rates for lifeguards can range from 22 to 27 dollars an hour depending on position and certifications, and DCR said they would provide lifeguard certifications for free. Applicants will have to pass a swim test.

More information on the free Learn to Swim program and lifeguard job opportunities can be found on the Mass. DCR website here.
