GLOUCESTER, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Massachusetts is investing in new pavement markings on ramps along Route 128 from Peabody to Gloucester to prevent wrong-way driving on highways.
This comes after there’s been a recent spike in wrong-way crashes and OUI’s throughout the Bay State.
Work on the markings began on Sunday and will continue until September 3rd at different locations between Exits 38 in Peabody and Exit 55 in Gloucester.
The work will take place overnight and will require temporary ramp closures and detours to allow for work crews to install the new markings.
Locals from Gloucester like Burt support the measures as he says he has a personal connection to the issue but hopes more can be done.
“We were friends with [a] kid that passed away, Chris Dailey, he was a friend of my sons,” he said.
“So, I don’t know what they could do to fix it. Maybe have a sensor or something that senses the car going the wrong way and then something would actually pop up and deflate the tires, that’s not what I’d do, but I hope someone figures it out.”
