BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — A round-trip Commuter Rail ticket to Foxborough for the World Cup games will cost $80, the MBTA announced Monday.
The price tag for a ride from South Station to Gillette Stadium, also known as Boston Stadium during the tournament, had some Bostonians raising their eyebrows.
“That’s crazy,” one South Station rider told WBZ NewsRadio. “Who can afford that?”
Tickets for the first five matches will go on sale at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, while ticket sales for Round 32 and the Quarterfinal games will be announced at a later date.
The MBTA said that taking the Commuter Rail will be a more affordable and predictable travel option to and from the matches compared to driving there.
Phillip Eng, Interim Transportation Secretary and MBTA General Manager and CEO, said in a statement that the MBTA has been developing this plan for over a year.
“We are ready to deliver unprecedented transit services to the seven World Cup matches held at Boston Stadium,” Eng added.
Other fans said if the commute stays the same, it’s a fair price to pay.
“If I had enough money to buy the tickets, I probably have enough money to spend for the 80 bucks,” another resident said.
