BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — A little goes a long way, and that's the idea behind "pod hotels" around the the world — including a recently-finished one near TD Garden in downtown Boston.
The MECO Hotel brings that style of travel accommodations to Boston by offering sleeping pods, called "capsules," instead of hotel rooms. A blend between a hostel and a hotel, sleeping pods at MECO Hotel are equipped with only a bed, lights, outlets and storage space.
“We’ve had guests say this is some of the best sleep they’ve ever got, because it’s like a cocoon in a way where it’s completely blacked out,” Gunish Chugani, co-founder and CEO of MECO, told WBZ NewsRadio.
Pod hotels have been a popular and cheaper alternative for solo travelers overseas, and Chugani wanted to popularize this trend here in the United States. It took the better part of a decade to build and finish the hotel, which is Boston's first and only pod hotel.
He added that MECO Hotel has staff on sight 24-hours a day and daily housekeeping, “so it is run in essence like a hotel,” just without the high price tag.
“We typically are at least three times cheaper than anything else in the city," he said. Prices get as low as $50 a night during the off-season.
MECO Hotel is located on Friend Street, less than a block away from TD Garden.
