LYNNFIELD, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Massachusetts State Police have identified the trooper killed in a wrong-way crash on Route 1 in Lynnfield early Wednesday morning as Trooper Kevin Trainor.
According to police, Trainor was commuting home after his shift around 2 a.m. when police received a report of driver traveling south in the northbound lanes. Trainor was responding to the call when the driver collided with his cruiser head on.
The driver of the wrong-way vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. Trainor was taken to a Boston hospital with life-threatening injuries where he later succumbed to his injuries.
At a press conference Wednesday, MSP Colonel Geoffrey Noble said the driver's "reckless actions stole [Trainor] from his family, as well as his brothers and sisters with the Massachusetts State Police."
"Nothing will ever repair the pain that we feel today, but we make a solemn promise: we will never forget his service as a decorated Massachusetts State Trooper," Noble said.
Gov. Maura Healey also spoke and offered her condolences to Trainor's family.
"We lost a hero today. Kevin Trainor was a hero, and he was doing heroic work in the early hours this morning when this terrible tragedy befell us," Healey said. "I also want to express my admiration and gratitude to the men and women in law enforcement both in the State Police and working in local law enforcement around Massachusetts."
MassDOT said Route 1 northbound at Walnut Street remained closed for several hours Wednesday morning and urged drivers to seek an alternative route during the morning commute.
