New Bedford Set To Open Vaccination Site For Seafood Industry Workers

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The City of New Bedford will soon open a waterfront vaccination center for essential seafood industry workers.

The Whaling City is putting its essential workers in the seafood industry at the front of the line with their very own vaccination site.

The site is located at the former Environmental Protection Agency's dewatering facility on the city's waterfront. The site is expected to be open in the coming weeks and handle at least 125 vaccinations per hour and with the ability to vaccinate up to 1,000 people per day.

New Bedford is known as America's longtime top commercial fishing port and Mayor Jon Mitchell said the city's seafood workforce plays a vital role in feeding the United States.

He said the city is expected to begin receiving additional doses of the Covid vaccine starting next week.

"Those include the one-shot Johnson and Johnson vaccine, so we really want to start to pick up the pase now," said Mitchell.

The mayor was joined by Senator Elizabeth Warren and Congressman Bill Keating on a tour of the facility Wednesday afternoon.
