BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — A new study ranks Boston as one of the best cities in the U.S. to live in without a car.

Boston came in at No. 2 on the list from Lawn Starter because of its walkability and access to public transit, just behind San Francisco and ahead of Washington D.C. Four other New England cities made the top 100—Providence, RI was No. 19, Worcester was No. 63, Bridgeport, CT was No. 83, and Springfield came in at No. 98.

The study also looked at how safe cities are for pedestrians, their climate, and overall accessibility. While Boston ranked top 50 in public transit, accessibility in safety, its climate ranking came in at 135th. One Bostonian said he agrees with the city's spot on this list.

"I absolutely 100 percent agree because I don't drive or own a license so I've grown up here and I've worked in the city pretty much my whole life [without a car]," he said.

For residents that don't have a car, the MBTA's trains and busses are a reliable mode of transportation.

"I take the train mainly and the busses run pretty well," one resident said. "The T's excellent and I think [Boston] is the best city in the world actually."

However, not everyone needs wheels or rails to get around Boston. Some folks prefer it the old fashion way.

"If you know the city then you can go pretty much everywhere walking," another resident said. "You don't really need anything else."

Not everyone was on board with going carless though, one resident said she would miss getting to drive her car around.
