WHITMAN, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A school district south of Boston has some agitated parents searching for answers.
Last week, the Whitman-Hanson School Committee learned about a $1.39 million budget deficit, and as a solution, over 20 positions would be cut.
Parents and teachers flooded the high school gym on Wednesday night with education officials, including Superintendent Jeff Szymaniak, to review school finances.
Families feel like they have been blindsided by the 25 cuts to teaching staff, like Tony, who is beginning to worry about his son’s academic future.
“I have huge concerns for both my children, you know, on multiple levels,” said Tony. “As far as being in school and after-school activities, things like that, being cut and them not being able to get access to all that, it’s disgusting.”
Another parent, Therese, agrees with many others who demand total budgetary transparency.
“We need to protect our funding for our schools,” said Therese. “If we had cuts to our school, our children would suffer. They won't get the services that they desperately need.”
