BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — After packing Massachusetts roadways on Wednesday as they traveled to their Thanksgiving destinations, commuters are expected to do so again this weekend when they return home from the holiday.

"The return home travel is a little bit different though because it’s spread out over a few days," AAA Northeast spokesperson Mark Schiel-Drop told WBZ NewsRadio. "The weekend is going to be pretty busy, but nothing like that crunch time Wednesday afternoon when everyone’s heading out to grandma’s house."

AAA predicts that more than 1.3 million people in Massachusetts are traveling more than 50 miles from home over the holiday, with the vast majority expected to drive.

Nationwide, AAA predicts the amount of people traveling more than 50 miles from home to be 54.6 million. These would be the highest travel numbers since 2019.

"It’s pretty back to normal out there on the roadways," said Schiel-Drop. "It feels like pre-pandemic times when it comes to traffic."

For this weekend’s peak traffic crunch, AAA is predicting Sunday afternoon between 4-8 p.m. as when drivers should try to avoid being on the road.

Weather will also be a factor during that time period, as rain is expected to arrive late in the day Sunday and last into the evening.
