CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A man armed with an assault-style rifle opened fire along Memorial Drive in Cambridge on Monday afternoon, prompting massive police response and temporary road closure.
Police responded to the area near River Street Bridge at around 1:20 p.m. and said the suspect, identified as Tyler Brown, was randomly shooting at vehicles and drivers.
Massachusetts State Police troopers responding to the scene shot down Brown and transported him to a nearby hospital, according to authorities. A Marine, who has a license to carry a gun and was nearby, also helped apprehend the suspect.
At least 50 to 60 rounds of ammunition were fired, and two other people were injured, both in life-threatening conditions.
Brown is now in police custody at the hospital and faces multiple charges.
“Clearly people’s lives were put at risk,” Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan said during a Monday press conference. “He is going to be charged with two counts of armed assault with intent to murder.”
Some residents who live in nearby apartment buildings told WBZ NewsRadio that hearing the gunshots was quite a startle.
“I can tell what noises are gunshots and what are not gunshots, but this was legit,” he said, adding that some of his neighbors’ apartments were in the line of fire.
“One of my neighbors on the second floor, his or her apartment got shot at,” he continued. “I hope they’re going to be okay after this.”
Another said he didn’t learn about what happened until they woke up and saw multiple road closures.
“I had no idea what was going on,” they said. “The bridge over there was blocked, no one could get through. They had everything blocked off.”
Ryan said Brown is a repeat offender, currently serving three years of probation after his release from prison last year.
