BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — The grand staircase of the State House was lined with students from The Croft School on Thursday to show off their musical prowess.

Children from the Jamaica Plain-based elementary school were given the chance to share their skills with lawmakers and State House staff during the event.

The Boston Music Project is a nonprofit organization that gives kids an outlet for creativity through music and gives them chances to bond with one another. Christopher Schroeder is the executive director at the nonprofit, and he’s happy the kids get to perform to a larger audience.

“In-school performances are great, but the opportunity to share their music with the larger public is always fun,” said Schroeder. “The social experience of playing with others, having that larger orchestral sound when everyone comes together.”

Since its beginning in 2011, the Boston Music Project has allowed thousands of children to learn more about rhythm, which usually ends in two different ways, according to Schroeder.

“Some of the students really aspire to be professional musicians, others just have this joy of music making, and some of these experiences, like performing at the State House or one of those memories that they’ll carry through everything that they do.”
