SWAMPSCOTT, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Swampscott High School participated in NoSo November: a way to decrease social media consumption.
NoSo is a nonprofit organization that centers its work on decreasing social media consumption through peer discussions.
School nurse Megan Ramirez discovered NoSo at a conference, and she said that its focus on kids working with each other to spread awareness of social media overconsumption was its biggest strength.
“Kids talking to other kids and not just an adult standing up in front of them and saying social media is bad when we’re all addicted to our phones too,” Ramirez said.
Freshman Aramis German and Junior Victoria Pierro were the peer leaders for Swampscott’s foray into NoSo’s programs.

According to the students, the challenge was successful and was received very positively.
“If I get the chance, and it would have to be November, I’d probably do it again because it helped a lot,” German said. “I think it really helped a lot with me balancing my homework and my sleep schedule. I took more walks, and I thought more creatively about what I can do. Started working on stuff, I started making music.”
“Every week, I started seeing my screen time and tried to take an hour off,” Pierro said, “There’s some kids that I know that said they deleted the big ones because you can keep scrolling and scrolling, but they said that made a big difference for them, even just deleting one.”
Nurse Ramirez said that NoSo provided resources and support that allowed the challenge to be as successful as they felt it was.
