UMass Dartmouth Student Struck And Killed By Vehicle On Campus

DARMOUTH, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A UMass Dartmouth freshman was struck and killed by a vehicle on campus Thursday, officials said.

According to the university, Campus Police were called at approximately 5:30 p.m. regarding a motor vehicle striking a pedestrian. Police responded and located 19-year-old university student Frank A. Petillo Jr., lying on the roadway on Ring Road with significant injuries.

Portillo was transported to St. Luke's Hospital where he was pronounced dead, officials said.

The university said the driver of the vehicle involved, a gray Honda Accord, was a fellow student and was located at the scene.

The Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit assigned to the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office along with the CARS Unit of the Massachusetts State Police are investigating the matter.

The university has offered counseling for students, faculty and staff.
