MANSFIELD, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Catman Cafe in Mansfield was the place to be on Sunday, as Team USA beat Canada 2-1 to win the gold medal in men’s hockey.
The Catman opened early for the game at 8 a.m., offering breakfast deals for those watching the game. It was an especially important watch party, considering the mother of Milford native and Team USA forward Matt Boldy is a bartender at the cafe.
Despite the Boldy family being in Milan, many of the patrons, like Mike and Jay, had kind words to share about Jennifer Boldy and her son.
“It’s just such an unbelievable experience for Jen, I couldn’t be prouder of her son,” said Mike. “He’s an amazing kid and can’t wait to see him bring home the gold and maybe bring it to Catman one day.”
The crowd justifiably went wild when Boldy opened the scoring in the first period.
The crowd also erupted when Jack Hughes scored the golden goal in overtime, winning the game for Team USA. Seeing the U.S. bring home gold once again after over 40 years was a surreal moment for all those in attendance.
“I’m feeling patriotic, it’s a long time coming. I remember 2010 when Sidney Crosby scored the golden goal for Canada in overtime,” said one fan. “It’s been a long 16 years, but it’s bittersweet, it’s unbelievable.”
Patrons couldn’t help but compare the game to the women’s hockey Team USA's win on Thursday, which also ended in a 2-1 Team USA win over Canada in overtime.
“U.S.A. all the way, it was great. Glad that the men did it exactly the way the women did it,” said another fan. “It was awesome.”
