WELLESLEY, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Wellesley College is introducing a free tuition program for students from families earning $200,000 or less per year.

The women's college announced its "tuition promise" program on Sept. 9, which begins in the 2027-28 academic year.

The most students eligible for the Wellesley Tuition Promise will have to pay is $26,600. Depending on a student's situation, some will pay nothing at all to attend the college.

"It's been rough having to go to school and having to pay for everything," Laura, a Wellesley College sophomore with a job, said. "While working, it's hard to balance both and do well."

According to an announcement from the college, Wellesley becomes the first women's college — and second private liberal arts institution — to expand free tuition at the $200,000 level.

Wellesley joins the more than 30 colleges and universities in Massachusetts offering free tuition to eligible applicants.
