BOSTON (WBZ-AM) -- The Colts need a new head coach after Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels had a change of heart and decided to remain in New England.

Indianapolis general manager Chris Ballard held a press conference this morning.

"I got a call Tuesday evening, saying he had decided to ... changed his mind, and was going in a different direction," Ballard said. "At that point I informed our owner, we informed y'all of where we were going, and we'll keep moving forward."

Naturally, Ballard admitted he was caught off-guard.

"Unquestionably, we were disappointed and surprised," he said. "We had agreed to contract terms, we had an agreement in place, we followed all the rules, did everything right. Two interviews, both of them went very well."

Ballard said the Colts have a list of candidates and they'll move forward with the right person who believes in the team's direction.

He wished McDaniels the best, and then ended his meeting with the media by saying the rivalry is back on.
