BOSTON (WBZ-AM) -- I was watching cable news at my desk yesterday when the bloviating began about the cheap raincoat First Lady Melania Trump wore during her visit to that shelter in Texas that said on the back: “I really don’t care, do you?”
And it dawned on me that in some ways, I agree with the message Mrs. Trump may or may not have been sending.
I really don’t care what Mrs. Trump wears, or why she wears it. Never have, never will, unless she shows up at the White House wearing a hat that says “down with America.”
I really don’t care that President Obama once wore a tan suit in the middle of summer.
In fact, I don’t care what any politician or their spouse wears, or eats, or pretends to believe in. I want to know what they do and how they do it, who is influencing them and who isn’t, what their true intentions are or aren’t.
Anything else is irrelevant.
I really don’t care about the sometimes-ancient political grudges that partisans of all kinds seem to love to nurse.
Our public life is, or ought to be, about responding to real needs, solving problems, learning from and overcoming mistakes, promoting justice and fairness. It’s way too serious to get bogged down in the often-petty grievances that dominate political discourse today.
I really don’t care about the opinions of the hateful and the stupid.
We all have our complaints and dumb moments, but if you’re venting just to get even or express a grossly uninformed opinion, I’m not interested.
I’ll save my attention for everyone else.
I suspect Mrs. Trump just grabbed the wrong raincoat when she left for Texas, but I really don’t care.
And a culture that carelessly wastes it’s energy caring about trivia isn’t one worth caring about.
