BOSTON (WBZ-AM) -- Is there a dumber debate in our political culture than the one over illegal immigration?
Few issues draw out as much misinformation, pandering, and cluelessless as this one.
Witness the back and forth yesterday over Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s ill-advised response to a question during a CNN interview about the vicious murder of a young Iowa woman by an allegedly illegal immigrant.
"I'm so sorry for the family here,” said Warren. “But one of the things we have to remember is we need an immigration system that is effective, that focuses on where real problems are."
Warren went on to talk about her preferred topic, the Trump administration’s family separation debacle. And all three of the Republicans who want to challenge Warren this fall pounced, calling her “wrong…disrespectful…careless” and “outrageously insensitive.”
(By the way, full disclosure, my adult son is a consultant to one of those candidates, John Kingston.)
Warren’s remarks reflect the tin ear many liberals have when it comes to discussing violent crime by illegals.
But the Republican uproar is also mindless.
There are no statistics to support the idea so heavily promoted by the right that illegal immigrant crime is widespread – the sketchy numbers that do exist suggest the opposite.
We fail to produce smart immigration policy in large part because the debate over it is so dumb.
And it just got a little bit dumber.
