BOSTON, MASS (WBZ NewsRadio) — Here’s a question that might make for some very interesting conversation in your home, car or office – what kind of person sends hate mail and death threats to a ten-year-old girl?
It happened in Framingham, where a fifth-grader at the Hemenway Elementary School found letters in her cubby calling her a “terrorist” and threatening to kill her.
Did I mention that she’s a Muslim?
Back to our question – who would do such a thing, and why?
As of this writing we still don’t know who wrote the letters, but let’s assume it was other students at the school. Chances are the author or authors got the idea from their parents.
Does it surprise you that adults would spew the nonsense that all Muslims are terrorists, and should be targeted with death threats?
You wouldn’t believe the rank stupidity and hatred I see in my inbox on a regular basis, let alone in online comments.
Framingham is not some outlier here. The Reading schools have experienced 30 cases of vile racist, anti-semitic and homophobic graffiti in just the past 18 months.
The community is rallying around that little Muslim girl, but that won’t solve the problem.
Between the internet and our grotesque political discourse, there’s poison flowing freely through our culture.
And there’s enough tolerance – even encouragement – of it, to ensure it won’t be drying up anytime soon.
