BOSTON, MA (WBZ-AM) — Carl Stevens is, of course, the poet laureate of WBZ, and I can only dream of being half as poetic as Carl. But here’s my stab at a rhyming answer to a classic Christmastime question:
Tonight for some kids as they slide into slumber
There’s one thing about which many will wonder:
If Santa is real as our legends recall
How is it that we see one at every mall?
We see Santas skydiving, Santas on skis
All sorts of places that aren’t chimneys.
It may be confusing to kids as they see
Santa in places he’s not supposed to be.
What’s with all these Santas, your child may well ask?
Well, here’s what to tell them to help them relax:
Those Santas you see all hither and yon
Are just helping Santa to get his job done.
Imagine how busy Santa must be
Preparing for his global deliveries?
He knows people love to enjoy his season
So he hires Santa helpers, and here is the reason:
While they span the globe spreading joy and good cheer
Santa gets ready, as do the reindeer.
He makes up his list, checks it twice
Getting it straight who’s been naughty and nice.
And tonight all his helpers take off their beards
And make way for the big guy as he spreads good cheer.
So there is your answer, simple and snappy:
It takes a village to make a child happy.
So go to bed glad, and don’t be uptight
Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night.
