BOSTON (WBZ-AM) -- Remember when Gold Star parent Khizr Khan, whose son was killed in Iraq, denounced then-candidate Donald Trump’s proposed Muslim ban by taking out his pocket copy of the US Constitution and asking if Trump had ever read it?
That image stayed with me because I often wonder if some of our most prominent politicians have ever bothered to read our founding documents.
For instance, most of you will recognize the second paragraph of the Declaration of Independence, and the words “we hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”
But do you remember the words that follow?
“That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed….”
“The consent of the governed.”
How is it that so many of the players in DC don’t seem to accept that rule?
You can find plenty of examples of Democrats who’ve forgotten it, like Harry Reid changing longstanding Senate rules so he could ram appointments through.
And now we have a president who wants to hold Americans hostage to a foolish political promise he made despite lacking the consent of the governed, and his main argument seems to be well, the opponents just don’t want me to have a victory.
Hey, all of you – it’s not about you and your petty power plays.
It’s our country, and you will find out that ruling it without our consent is a crime we cannot and will not forgive.
