Senate Will Allow Some Russian Sanctions To End

Democrats are falling short in their attempt to stop the removal of sanctions against the companies of a Russian oligarch who is a close ally of Vladimir Putin.  Eleven Republicans joined Democrats in voting to advance a vote to force the Treasury Department to enforce the sanctions placed on Oleg Deripaska's  companies.  The 57-42 vote fell three short of what it needed to advance.  Democrats had urged Republicans to wait until the Special Counsel's report is released before allowing the sanctions to end since Deripaska has been mentioned in some court filings.  The Treasury Department argued that Deripaska is taking steps to separate himself from his businesses and that personal sanctions against him remain in place.
