NEWBURYPORT, MA (WBZ-AM)  -- The street lights are off in Newburyport and so are the lights inside local restaurants and shops.

The community is one of handful in the Merrimack Valley are without power and they’ll likely remain in the dark for days. this power outage is not good for the local economy either.

“well, it’s a concern obviously because of the economic impact it was already was a bad weekend most of last week on the heels of this one it it’s has been a rough week for sure,” said Newburyport mayor Donna Holaday.

There’s no relief in sight, yet. as the mayor says, national grid is still in “damage assessment mode.”

Major cause of the problem in the Merrimack Valley appears to be from "a freed to a substation in Groveland" said Holaday.
