BOSTON (WBZ-AM) -- Each month, “WBZ Cares” highlights a worthy non-profit organization and tells the story of what that organization does for the community. This month WBZ is profiling New England Donor Services, which coordinates organ and tissue donation in New England.
Kenny Laferriere is living proof the organ donor process works. He's a Quality Systems Specialist at New England Donor Services, but he's also a heart recipient.
“It’s been 17 years since my heart transplant. So it’s been…umm...a true success story. I’m honored to be a part of the whole process. And honored and humbled to be able to work here at New England Donor Services and be able to pay it forward.”
Laferriere hopes his experience can show others the need for organ donors and how the system is a success.
“The process works and continues to work. I like to think of myself as a representation of hundreds, if not thousands, of people across New England and across the country that are waiting for a transplant, or have been transplanted. So yes, I am a recipient, but I think it’s important to tell my story so people know that I am not the only one, there are others out there waiting for these lifesaving gifts. So, it’s very important to be a part of the overall message,” Laferriere stated.
Laferriere and his loved ones are grateful for the organ donor process.
“For my family personally, it’s been something that’s brought us together as a family and really given us the true meaning of life and how short life can be,” Laferriere said.
