Hall Of Famer Jim Rice Weighs In On Mookie Betts's Offensive Struggles

BOSTON (WBZ-AM) -- Red Sox outfielder Mookie Betts snapped an 0-for-16 skid last week when he singled once in three trips to the plate.

He followed that up with his first home run of the spring yesterday against the Orioles as part of a perfect day. Betts also walked twice and scored a pair of runs, then spoke with WBZ's Jonny Miller about how he's feeling.

"I feel good," he said. "It's spring training so it's all a process, but I still have a little ways to go and a couple of things to work on."

Betts said he's working on consistency and his arm strength in the field.

He also talked about the keys to regaining a bit of his power-stroke this year.

"Just trying not to do to much, just be myself," he said. "That's all I can do, I mean, I can't control anything else but myself."

Hall of Famer Jim Rice is in camp observing and helping out.

Jim was asked if there was any reason Betts' average dipped last year or he's struggled this spring.

"He overthinks, and just needs to let his normal ability take over," Rice said. "Once that ability takes over, he has nothing to worry about. Just like a guy getting into a slump, he started thinking too much. And then, when he's hitting the ball, he's not thinking at all. Right now, he's thinking too much."

Sox will open in Tampa March 29th.
