BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Starting at the end of the month, New Hampshire will no longer require annual vehicle inspections. This means Massachusetts will be one of only 13 states with the rule, but some residents hope to change that.

A provision in the New Hampshire state budget, signed by Gov. Kelly Ayotte in June of last year, ends the requirement on Jan. 31. "Emissions/on-board diagnostics testing will also end on that date. Until then, safety and emission inspections remain required as usual," the state said.

One Bay State resident told WBZ NewsRadio that Massachusetts needs to follow other states, like New Hampshire, and "get rid" of vehicle inspections.

"Let's just move forward and take the next step," another local said.

One resident said the inspections are especially frustrating for him "as someone who likes to modify their car, it makes it difficult and limits a lot of the stuff you can do legally." he said.

Meantime, other residents said they think the current inspections check too many things, but for more important parts of the inspection should be kept in place.

"Wipers are wipers. It should be major things: brakes, tires, seatbelts, you know what I mean? Real safety," one said.

"The cars that need brakes, exhausts, mechanical problems that could endanger other people's life, should definitely not be on the road. It probably could be tweaked a little better but there's a lot of cars that probably shouldn't be on the road," said another.

One person said inspections are "most certainly annoying" but "it's better to make sure that cars are at least safe on the road."
