Injured Red Sox Lefty Drew Pomeranz Nearing Game Action

BOSTON (WBZ-AM) -- Red Sox lefty Drew Pomeranz was kind of a co-ace with Chris Sale last year, at least in the sense of matching Sale's team-high 17 wins.

But, after a 17-and-6 season and more than respectable 3-32 ERA, Pomeranz has been slowed in spring training with a strained flexor tendon. He suffered the setback in the first inning of his first start.

Good news, though: Pomeranz tested the elbow in a live batting practice session yesterday against Rafael Devers and Sandy Leon.

This Change Sparked Andrew Benintendi's Hot Spring Start For Red Sox

Benintendi spoke with WBZ's Jonny Miller and discussed what he's still working on with the regular season approaching.

"That felt good," he said. "I don't know velocity-wise what it was, but it was carrying through, it was getting on 'em quick, and that's what I look for ... and that's the first day I've really gotten after it. I threw a bullpen out there another day where we were just kind of moving, but today I was actually kind of just firing them in there, and it felt pretty great, it felt normal."

Pomeranz said he hopes the next step is to get in a real game of some sort.

The Red Sox are 14-and-8 this spring and hosting the Phillies Monday, with Sale on the mound, after Brian Johnson's four scoreless frames in yesterday's 2-1 edging of the Pirates.
