MALDEN, MA (WBZ-AM) – The debate on whether or not to arm school employees following the latest school shooting is now in Massachusetts
The State’s Board of Elementary and Secondary Education considered its stance on this Tuesday in Malden.
A resolution opposed to arming educators is being considered as part of a larger look at school safety.
Jeff Wulfson, the board’s acting commissioner, described this morning's debates as a rare moment --typically the board has not weigh in on policy matters not under its purview.
However, some members say Massachusetts should take a leadership role in the national debate over whether to arm educators is that it turns to school shooting.
Even if the vote is symbolic.
A non-binding resolution by a board member Ed Doherty would proclaim the board against the idea.
Current state law requires every district to have school specific plans for dealing with catastrophic events
A panel of school officials and emergency response personnel were also on hand in Malden to help the board take a deep dive into Massachusetts schools ability to deter or respond to threats to children safety.
