Red Sox Offense Off To Sluggish Start

BOSTON (WBZ-AM) -- Red Sox starting pitchers have been phenomenal to start the year--two runs allowed through 24 innings. In fact, Boston's overall pitching ranks fourth in baseball with a 2-31 ERA.

The offense? Not so good.

Sox are tied for 25th in the majors with 10 runs, their .214 average is 23rd, and their .640 OPS is 24th.

But we're only four games into the season. Mookie Betts and J.D. Martinez expect a turnaround.

"You know, if we can win games 2-1 and whatever else it was, we're in a good spot," Betts said. "Because we know we're going to score runs--it's just a matter of kind of putting it all together."

Red Sox Starting Pitching On Historic Run

The Red Sox lead the American League East after their first series of the year, and starting pitching has been the key.

"That's the most important thing, winning ball games," Martinez said. "It doesn't matter how we win 'em. Obviously the pitching has been great, and they've been almost picking us up, but there's going to come a time where the offense kind of picks them up, and kind of that's how good teams work.

Boston's won its last three--1-0, 3-2, and 2-1.

Monday night, the Sox will start a two-game set in Miami at 7:10 p.m. against a Marlins team that's already played 45 innings through four games and collectively been out-scored 19-18.
