They say good things come to those who wait, but for last-minute tax filers this is definitely your last reprieve. Thanks to "certain IRS systems" that were "experiencing technical difficulties," the IRS website to make payments and access other services went down today.
Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin announced Tuesday that procrastinating taxpayers would be granted an extra day. People must file their taxes or ask for an extension by midnight, April 18th.
“We’ll make sure taxpayers have extensions once the system comes up to make sure they can use it, and it in no way impacts people paying their taxes,” Mnuchin said according to The Associated Press. “It was just a technical issue we’re working through.”
The IRS still expects you to pay your taxes, but, because certain IRS systems experienced "technical difficulties," extensions will be granted to those who were impacted by the outage when the site is restored.
Electronic filing has become the most popular way for Americans to file their taxes every year. But, pages on the IRS website that people used to view account information, make direct payments, or set up payment plans were not functioning correctly most of the day Tuesday.
About five million returns were filed on the last day of 2017's tax season.
Tax day fell on April 17th this year thanks to the 15th falling on a Sunday and April 16th, was Emancipation Day, a holiday in Washington D.C.
