BOSTON (WBZ-AM) -- Boston Police have resumed using license plate scanners after stopping the practice in 2013.

BPD Commissioner Bill Evans told WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Carl Stevens that the department has addressed the privacy concerns expressed by the ACLU, which halted the practice five years ago.

He said the data will only be used to investigate crimes--and would only be stored for thirty days.

Evans said the scanners, which are in position in three locations around Boston, are used in cities around the world.

"It's effective for terrorism, heaven forbid we have another attack here in the city," he said. "Or dealing with some real sensitive criminal investigations, such as, you know, an abducted child."
