SAUGUS (WBZ-AM) -- Some residents of a Saugus neighborhood got a loud late-night wake-up call earlier this week--and officials are blaming a furry critter.

Chris Williams lives down the street from the Wheelabrator Trash-To-Energy Plant, and tells WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Carl Stevens that a noise from the plant woke him late Monday night.

"The noise is horrendous," he said. "You're dead asleep at 11:30 at night, and when that vent first cracks open, it's a blast ... it basically sounded like a jet engine had landed on my front lawn. I have a fireplace in my bedroom, and the sound, it traveled down through the fireplace. It was insane, I came off my bed like a bolt of lightning."

The general manager of Wheelabrator said in a statement that a raccoon tripped an electrical circuit at the plant, triggering a loud release of steam pressure.

But Williams doesn't buy it--he says this has happened before, and would like the aging plant closed down.
