Salem Judge Controversy Discussed In Governor's Council Meeting

BOSTON (WBZ-AM) -- A controversial decision by a Massachusetts judge to let a convicted heroin dealer off without jail time was the topic of discussion at a Governor's Council meeting at the State House Wednesday.

Councilor Marilyn Devaney told the rest of the council she'd like to see Salem Superior Court Judge Timothy Feely removed from the bench for his decision to give the dealter probation.

Devaney said Feely's comments that the dealer was just trying to support his family were highly inappropriate.

She said there's a measure being drafted in the House calling for Feely's removal. A dozen House lawmakers have banded together to try to remove the judge from the bench.

The measure would have to be approved by the House and Senate and then by Gov. Charlie Baker, who would send it to the Governor's Council for the vote.

Devaney is calling on Baker to approve the measure--but councilor Terrence Kennedy argued that Judge Feely is getting a raw deal from the press.

Kennedy called Feely a tough, law-and-order judge.
