CHELSEA (WBZ-AM) -- A man prosecutors say stabbed a waitress who confronted him over an unpaid bill was arraigned Thursday in Chelsea District Court.
Gerardo Menjivar, 36 of Lynn, was ordered held on $100,000 bail--despite the defense's objections that he had no prior criminal record. He is charged with armed assault with intent to murder.
Prosecutors say Menjivar walked out of Las Pupusas Del Chino restaurant on Blossom Street in Chelsea around 11 p.m. on May 7 without paying his bill.
A waitress at the restaurant followed him out to confront him about the bill. Police said he grabbed the woman and told her, "I'll pay the bill after I kill you," before stabbing her in the neck and hand.
She suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
Chelsea Police put out a nation-wide BOLO alert for Menjivar and his vehicle, leading to his capture on May 10 in Beltsville, Maryland by the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force.
The judge also denied a request by the defense to allow Menjivar to hide himself during his appearance in court.
