Gov. Baker Cancels Plans To Send MA National Guard Crew To Border

BOSTON (WBZ-AM) -- Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker called the treatment of migrant children and families at the border "inhumane," and says he's cancelling plans to send a Massachusetts National Guard crew to the US-Mexico border.

"I said two weeks ago that I did not support the decision of the Trump administration to separate kids," Baker told WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Kim Tunnicliffe. "I think it's cruel and inhumane, and we told the National Guard to hold steady and to not go down to the border, period. So we will not be supporting that initiative."

Figures Show About 2,000 Minors Separated From Families

Nearly 2,000 minors have been separated from their families at the U.S. border over a six-week period during a crackdown on illegal entries, according to Department of Homeland Security figures obtained by The Associated Press.

The governor announced earlier this month that he would send a military chopper, a pilot, and two analysts to assist President Trump's mission to curb illegal border crossings. The mission chopper was expected to fly down by the end of June.

Rep. Kennedy said he was turned away when he tried to visit a detention center for children separated from their parents in Tornillo, Texas.
