BOSTON, MA (WBZ-AM) -- The families of 2 Boston firefighters killed in a 9-alarm blaze in the back bay, made an emotional plea for tougher regulations on workers who perform hot work.
Kathy Malone says the deaths of her brother Boston Fire Lt. Ed Walsh and Firefighter Michael Kennedy were no accident.
The two were killed while responding a fast-moving fire, sparked by welders who were working on an iron railing.
Now she and Kennedy’s mother, Kathy Crosby-Bell, are urging lawmakers to pass a so-called “Hot Work” bill that to create training standards for welders and cutters and to increase penalties against those who break the law.
