Republican Baker Says 10 Dem Mayors Back His Re-Election

BOSTON (AP) - Republican Gov. Charlie Baker's campaign says 22 Massachusetts mayors, including 10 Democrats, have endorsed his re-election campaign. Among the Democrats announcing their backing of the governor Thursday over his Democratic challenger, Jay Gonzalez, was Springfield's Domenic Sarno, the mayor of the state's third-largest city.

There are 47 mayors overall in Massachusetts. The Democratic mayors of Revere, Fall River, Fitchburg, Woburn, Newburyport, Lawrence, Lowell, Westfield and Braintree also endorsed Baker, along with seven mayors who are independents and five Republicans.

Boston Mayor Marty Walsh on Wednesday endorsed Gonzalez, and the Democratic nominee for governor previously announced the support of several other Democratic mayors.Gonzalez, meanwhile, says he's accepted proposals from five organizations seeking to host regional debates between now and the general election.

Baker's campaign had no immediate comment on debate plans.
