States Send Personnel To Southeast As Florence Approaches

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — New England states are stepping up to help with whatever recovery efforts are needed as Hurricane Florence closes in on the Southeast.

Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy says 10 National Guard soldiers were scheduled to arrive in Tennessee Wednesday aboard UH-60 Blackhawk and CH-47 Chinook helicopters. The crews are being staged to provide assistance quickly in the aftermath of the storm.

Massachusetts has also deployed four personnel to help in response and recovery efforts. Two are headed for North Carolina, one to Virginia and one to the Federal Emergency Management Agency's Washington, D.C. headquarters.

The governors of North and South Carolina, Virginia and Georgia have declared emergencies.

The American Red Cross said Wednesday that 10 additional volunteers from Southern New England were being deployed to the region, many to help out at shelters.
