BOSTON (WBZ-AM) -- The senator at the center of the controversy over Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh made good on his promise to speak at an event in Boston today. Senator Jeff Flake broke with party ranks on Friday and called for an FBI investigation into sexual abuse allegations against Kavanaugh.
WBZ's Kim Tunnicliffe reports the senator addressed a large crowd at City Hall Plaza, speaking at the Forbes 30 Under 30 Summit.
Hundreds of millennials cheered as a picture of Senator Flake was projected onto the big screen, showing his encounter with two women inside an elevator. Those women tearfully urged Flake to vote against the Kavanaugh nomination and told him about their own experiences with sexual abuse. Flake was asked how much that encounter affected him.
"Well, it was that experience, as well as a lot of others. Calls and emails and texts from women I never thought I'd hear from in this regard, saying here's what happened to me when I was young."
Lauren McGuiness of New York City gives the senator a lot of credit for just showing up at the Forbes summit. "I'm really happy that he came out here and didn't cancel. It just showed how strong he is as a person facing this tremendous pressure."
