Susan Collins Says Kavanaugh Vote Was Not Political

BOSTON (WBZ-AM) -- Maine Senator Susan Collins voted in favor of Brett Kavanaugh's confirmation, and while some constituents are not happy about the decision, Collins tells CBS' 60 Minutes this was not a political decision.

"I did try to weigh a political calculus to this decision," Collins said. "It's too important for that. I just had to do what I think is right."

Bucking Party, Murkowski Charts Her Own Path On Kavanaugh

Murkowski suggested she will oppose President Donald Trump's Supreme Court nominee this weekend after she became the only GOP senator to oppose advancing Kavanaugh's nomination during a tense, high-stakes Senate floor vote.

Despite protesters outside her home, Collins says that Maine residents have been overwhelmingly positive and that many people thanked her for doing the right thing. Collins comes up for reelection in 2020 and could face some high profile competition.

Susan Rice, former National Security Advisor to President Obama, says she'll decide after next month's midterms whether to run for Collins' seat.
