Jeff Sessions Resigns As U.S. Attorney General

WASHINGTON, D.C. (WBZ-AM) -- United States Attorney General Jeff Sessions has resigned. 

Sessions submitted a letter to President Trump on Tuesday at his request. 

In the letter, Sessions said that he was "particularly grateful to the fabulous men and women in law enforcement all over this country with whom I have served. I have had no greater honor than to serve alongside them. As I have said many times, they have my thanks and I will always have their backs."

In a tweet, President Donald J. Trump said that Matthew G. Whitaker, Chief of Staff to Sessions at the Department of Justice will become Acting Attorney General. 

The President says a permanent replacement for Sessions will be announced: "at a later date".
