Cape Cod School Evacuated After Gas Leak

MASHPEE, MA (WBZ-AM) —  Students at a school on Cape Cod have been evacuated for the rest of the day after an apparent natural gas leak Tuesday morning.

Students attending the Quashnet Elementary School were dismissed at 11:30 a.m according to school officials via facebook.

"Students are not able to return to their classrooms to retrieve coats and backpacks.," said Superintendent Patty DeBoer.

DeBoer said that Students and staff at the school evacuated the building at about 9:50 am due to a strong gas odor coming from the cafeteria/loading dock area.

The Mashpee Fire Department immediately responded. The gymnasium was inspected and deemed safe and the students and staff were placed there before the dismissal.

School Officials say that Students who normally go to the Boys and Girls Club will be walked there. Adventure Club students will be sent to the Coombs School and if there no one home to receive a student, they will be brought to the Mashpee Middle-High School to await a parent pick-up.

According to  WBZ-TV, Two kitchen workers were overcome by the gas, and one was taken to a local hospital. Officials are still on the scene and are investigating the cause of the leak.
